The Data Integration & Ontologies department at Novo Nordisk is looking for a Research Ontologist with strong communication and leadership skills to support our data management initiative.

About the department

The newly established department of Data Integration & Ontologies aims at digitization of data from early research. With FAIR principles as the foundation, the department aims at simplifying the process of data capture using semantic models to establish interoperability across data sets from pre-clinical research. The long-term vision of the department is to create a digital mindset by driving the adoption of FAIR principles across the pipeline. This department plays a key role in the intersection between research scientists, application developers and data modelers. The team will act as a liaison among these groups to ensure the quality and consistency of data being generated while showcasing strong gains from analytics models using clean data.

As a Research Ontologist, you will have the exciting opportunity to drive the adoption of standardized vocabularies and ontologies thereby ensuring semantic interoperability across the early research pipeline.

About the position

The Research Ontologist will be perceived as an area specialist within one or several processes across a VP/CVP area. You will be mainly involved in the Scientific research and development within either of one (Bioinformatics, Bio-ontologies, Laboratory informatics, Metadata management and data integration), You will participate in Lob activities and ensure to work according to NNWay and in adherence to OHS regulations.

You will be responsible for the creation/ update of controlled vocabularies, taxonomies and ontologies for a specific domain with emphasis on sharing these across the company to maintain business standards for data. Since this data could be subject to regulatory guidelines, the incumbent is expected to collaborate across multiple functions to identify the best fit semantic models that suit the needs of the organisation. Job responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Develop customized ontologies/semantic models and standards by identifying and enriching existing public ontologies that suit the business needs using semantic web technologies
  • Interact with domain experts and data scientists to develop guidelines for ontology identification, enrichment and integration with existing systems.
  • Ensure data integrity and quality within the Ontology Management Systems after upgrades and patches.
  • Develop a review and governance system to enable easy request for ontology enrichment and or changes to suit the business needs.
  • Communicate the status of the ontology enrichment and integration along with milestones, key achievements and roadblocks if any with stakeholders and leadership on a regular basis.
  • Popularise the use of controlled vocabularies, ontologies and data management best practices through trainings and workshops.

Qualifications & Experience

The ideal candidate should have below skills and experience:

  • Master’s degree or a PhD in life sciences or a related field, with a few years post PHD experience in Bio-ontologies, metadata management and data integration, semantic technologies, ontology engineering, ontology curation and data management.
  • Minimum 3-5 years of experience within Bio-ontologies, metadata management and data integration.
  • Knowledge of data format standards, including industry standards as well as database management systems.
  • Multicultural exposure and true global mindset i.e. understanding, and acceptance of cultural differences is required
  • Business mindset and always showing initiative and enthusiasm.
  • Proactive and well organized
  • Strong communication and networking skills.
